Los Knickerbockers se formaron en 1962 en Bergenfield, New Jersey. Tomaron su nombre de la avenida Knickerbocker de su ciudad natal. El cantante y saxo era Buddy Randell (su nombre verdadero es William Crandall). Este había tocado en los Rockin' Saints y en los Royal Teens. Le acompañaban, en un primer momento, los hermanos Beau Charles (guitarra) y John Charles (bajo) , Ned Brown (teclads) y Skip Cherrubino (batería). Los hermanos Beau y Charles se llamaban realmente Robert y John Carlos Cecchino. La formación no tardo en sufrir cambios ya que Brown y Cherrubino dejaron el grupo en 1964. El sustituto de Cherrubino fue Jimmy Walker .
Su mayor éxito fue "Lies", una canción explosiva desde el primer acorde. Con ella llegaron al puesto número 20 de las listas de exitos estadounidenses. Otros temas relevantes de su discografía son "The Coming Generation", que acompaña a "Lies" en este single y "One Track Mind".
